Artist Spotlight: Janksta

Another artist spotlight featuring the homegrown sounds of Janksta from Boulder, CO. We caught up with artist recently and got to ask him a few questions about producing, names, and electro.

–What drove you toward electronic music and the particular style that you embody today?
I remember listening to house and trance back in elementary school. I had hip hop and rock phases, but always ended up back with electronic music. It was when I moved to Boulder for college that I began to dabble, first with just DJing, then later producing. I feel like the years of listening to the music as well as the numerous shows I have seen thus far have all influenced the style I strive for today.

–You’ve just had a few official releases, tell us about them?
Well my debut official release was a remix for Adam Cooper’s “Let it Go,” and was a collaboration with Kastra (incredibleproducer). Antiblaze Records was happy with the result and they signed me on to do some originals. This led to workingwith Australian vocalist Michelle Martinez for “Calling a Hero.” We had a remix competition with close to 300 entries from all over the world, where the winner (‘Przemyslaw Grzelak’ from Poland) had their track released on the remix EP. I also did my own electro remix for this EP with the purpose of having a track that would fit into the vibe of my live sets.

Janksta is a unique title, how did you decide on that?
Its basically just a twist off my last name, my brother helped me come up with it one day. I liked the bit of comic appeal it had, especially after seeing the definition that had been put up on urbandictionary haha, and it just stuck.

–What sites/ channels should we pay attention to in order to stay up to date with your work?
Just my soundcloud and facebook, I’m going to be releasing quite a few new tracks in the coming months, as well as a couplemore Beatport releases that I’m all very excited about. Keep in touch with these pages to stay posted!

Murder Sound Vip- Munchi ft. MIA+Don Dadda- Shaun D :Electro

munchi

Friday comes around once a week so to celebrate another Friday coming here is a bit of trunk thumpin goodness for you.
16 mia lg

Munchi is no new name but he continues to create new and innovative sounds, recently collaborating with M.I.A. for the track “Murder Sound VIP”, which came off the Vicki Leekx Mixtape. This choon breaks down into a almost trap skip beat that could make Willy Wonka throw up a gang sign.
Shaun D
I hadn’t heard the name Shaun D until recently when his soundcloud released a few tracks that were endorsed by Mad Decent. I was happy to discover his carnival- carribean-esque heavy hitting sound. Hope it’s a mutual good find for all.

—- Who are some of your influences?
If you listen to our back catalogue you’ll hear everything from Electro pop, Hip Hop, Rave/ Acid and Jungle/ Drum and Bass… So if I had to name a few it would be artists like M.I.A., Diplo, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Marley Marl, Human League, DJ Hype and more, I think every year someone manages to influence us for sure.

—-How would you describe your musical style?
Now I would just call it Global Bass as we do everything from Moombahton, Moombacore, Drumstep, Dubstep, and Kuderu… Bass is definitely the man factor for sure.

—-Punx Soundcheck seems to always be busy doing something, want to highlight what your working on lately/ projects your involved in?
At the moment we are working on the album and several releases for different labels, running our label Arcade Pony, I’m also working with Sarah Young who is big on the global bass scene and we’ve just released a great EP with Adidas and working on her next single too, loads of gigs and too many remixs… so yes were busy at the moment.

—-Whats your favorite piece of work to date, and why?
That’s another hard question, I’d have to say this album we are working on at the moment as I really feel we have found our sound with this album. With the last album “From the Roots” you can hear where we were gonna go with our sound and this album is it.

—-Can you talk about the upcoming album? its theme? Also the format, which is pretty unique?
This album is called “I Feel Zombie” and it’s the soundtrack to the best ever zombie film never made. We’ve had a comic done for this so its not just a album but music to a story. The comic basically is about Punx Soundcheck and a load of zombies so we decided to split the album, which will be released separately, the first part is basically the music for the club scenes in the comic strip and the second half is going to be very cinematic in sound.
Also there will be lots of promo bits to go with the album, like the comic, desktop backgrounds and posters. I’m sure you guys will be the first to offer the comic as a free download.

—-When is the release?
The first part of the album should be out in time for Halloween and I’m not sure when the second part will be out as its going to take time to do it as we are using real church organs and drums on this one, def not a dance album.

—-If you had to pick 1 thing to have during the zombie apocalypse, what would it be?
I have nightmares about this stuff which makes me laugh but if I had to bring one thing with me in a zombie takeover it would probably be a maxed out ipod so I can listen to music while holed up in my fortress.. oh and loads of food for sure.

—-If you could change 1 thing about life what would it be?
If I had to change one thing about me it would probably be leave the food alone. What’s not good for me is long studio sessions, you tend to eat at the wrong time and not move for long periods, but Arif is one of these guys who can eat what he wants and just doesn’t put anything on.

—–What artists should we pay attention to?
Running my label I do find some really good unkown artists such as Fitzo who’s going to be releasing on the label soon, also look for JTB, Krucy Darkstar, Twiggy & Trufix, and my favorite at the moment Ngunzungunzu who are M.I.A.’s tour DJ’s too.

—–What sites/ channels should we pay attention to in order to stay up to date with your work and your labels?

For the latest updates on Punx Soundcheck and Arcade Pony you can go to www.punxsoundcheck.com , also we have Facebook pages for us and the label, we also have a Tumblr (http://arcadeponyrecords.tumblr.com/) which is always updated with the latest news and things.
